The Mrs and I can't help but wonder if it's time for a change. Son the Elder has not improved and maybe, just maybe a different approach would be beneficial to him.
We are considering Bethesda Lutheran Communities as a home for this young man. We have thought for some time that this would eventually be his home. Now we think a prolonged wait does not serve him well.
Of course there are waiting lists for Home and Community Services. We will have to accept an ICF-MR home until he waits his turn for HCS -- could be several years. We will make visits and start the process with whatever paperwork is required.
We expected to wait. It now appears that an ICF-MR home might be accepting applicants in several States. This would still take time, months though, instead of years. While this complicates matters, it does not seem prudent to wait if funding is available -- one never do know do one, if funding will remain for new applicants?
Why is this a complication?
We do not live near a Bethesda facility. Son the Elder will be moving -- FAR AWAY.
Our daughter is also moving, as a call to serve is imminent (not a done deal, seems certain though), a call to a congregation as a Deaconess. She too will be far away. Why no CAPS for her? Well, we have been eagerly seeking her move into her own life. She is ready to move on into her own sphere of living. Also, we can call her and have a conversation. We can even see her on video chat!
Son the Elder does not speak. Yes, the folks in charge will happily tell us all that's going on with him. It would make a tremendous difference though if he could tell us - in his voice - how he is doing.
We will live near him, but not for several years! Those are the complications. He will be fine, we will have the more difficult adjustment.
Nothing is yet decided, but 2012 is looking like a banner year for change at my address!
